SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd April 2004

It was great to have the kids participating in a variety of activities during this week. The weather was fantastic and we had 50-60+ kids daily.

Topics covered included: Kaupapa Maori, Health, Waka Ama, other physical activities and some fun. We thank all parents and caregivers who have supported us.

Raewyn Klenner took the kids for Kaupapa Maori at the Marae each day from 10am -1030.

Then from 1030-11am the kids experienced a health presentation from each of our services:

Monday: A representative from Mainland spoke to the children about the benefits of drinking milk and how calcium makes strong bones. The kids were treated to chocolate milk and yoghurt courtesy of Mainland.  From here it was time for physical activity – Out on the waka or out to play touch rugby.

Then back to the health unit for lunch.  The kids went home with a bag of goodies (Once again thanks to Mainland for the fridge magnets, growth charts, balloons, calendars etc).

Tuesday: Natalie talked to about safety issues around the home and gave away great prizes such as smoke alarms which many of our tamariki say they don’t have at home. From here it was off to play basketball with Tiwai and Meegan.

Wednesday – Faith and Sue talked about Meningitis and not sharing germs this winter. And also ‘Blow and Throw’ (to keep ears and noses clear).  The kids enjoyed the quizzes and the whole concept of ‘Don’t Share Spit’.  Lots of drink bottles and other prizes were given away.

Thursday – the last day of our holiday programme.  Elaine and Tiwai spoke about nutrition and healthy eating, with a focus on reading food labels and knowing how much fat and sugar is in what we buy and eat. Bicycle Safety was also covered including the importance of wearing safety helmets.  From here it was off to play touch rugby and then back for lunch.

A big thankyou goes out to all of the Ora Toa staff, and local whanau who helped with the activities: everything from making lunches to assisting with crossing the busy main road to get to the waka.

We were grateful for fine weather during the week and feedback from kids, parents and caregivers has indicated that the holiday programme was filled with lots of fun and excellent health messages.
